"Wages of Sin" (2005)

Sue Hides From Taylor's Wrath"Wages Of Sin" (2005) - InTo Deep Prod.
Feature, Panasonic SDX-900 16:9 24p
Writer / Producer / Director Aaron Robson
DP / Camera Chris Reilly
DP / Lighting Director Tim Otholt

When Aaron offered me the DP/gaffer/camera operator position on "Wages of Sin", I had to decline - doing 3 jobs with a full size broadcast camera in an condemned house with no electricity, running water, or heat, in freezing weather, with only a 3-man grip & electric team for 28 days was just, well, a little too much for this 38 year old DP.

To help the production run smoothly, I recommended hiring a second DP - someone who would operate camera and manage the camera department, while I would do what I enjoy most - lighting the movie.  Aaron posted another ad, and after a few unsuccessful applicants, Aaron hired the perfect candidate:  Chris Reilly, an aspiring DP from Brooks Institute of Photography.

On "Wages of Sin", both Chris Reilly and I share the cinematography credit.  Chris was responsible for composition and operating camera, while I was responsible for both designing and executing our complicated lighting setups.  Chris is a real trooper - after four 15 hour days in the snow, Chris got up bright and early, packed up the camera, and ran around Spokane Washington shooting exterior shots while I setup lights for the night shots.

"Wages of Sin" is a horror movie about Sue Walker (Ashlie Clark), an adopted twenty-something who inherits a derelict home from her biological parents she's never met.  With her supportive boyfriend Ron (Brandon Michael) and pot smoking friends (Prentice Reedy and Lauren Zelman), they take a roadtrip to explore Sue's new home, unknowing of the evil that dwells in the house.

A real triumph,"Wages of Sin" is a low budget feature with a big budget look.  Partly due to the Panasonic SDX-900 (forget those crappy little DV cameras!), having a condemned house we could completely destroy, and a great production team carefully put together by producer / director Aaron Joeseph Robson. Our set builders, Joshua Thomas and Jeff Ames, could build anything with hammer and duct tape.  Our biggest contributors when the going got tough was two too-eager-to-please Spokane film makers Josh Bernsdorf & Scott Christy, and our die-hard makeup-special-effects-caterer-cook-psychologist-construction-worker-grip-electrician-never-say-no-always-smiling-do-anything Cheyne Wilson

Our shoot was full of challenges.  The first: only two electrical outlets (two 20 amp circuits!) to light a whole movie, including craft service, catering, wardrobe, and two RVs!

Here are some stills from the movie:
